StarSkate Program
For the Love of Skating
StarSkate is an excellent option for former CanSkate JD participants, allowing skaters to
further develop skating skills in the disciplines of Skating Skills,
Freeskate (jumps and spins etc.) and Ice Dancing in either group or private
lesson format. Skaters may take tests against a national standard and/ or
start competing.
Starskate sessions allow time for
practice and private or semi-private lessons to be booked independently with
a coach. Ice time may be purchased as a full session (see current brochure
for more information) or as a Buy-On (a single session), and are
paid to the club. Fees are for ice time only, except for enrichment
sessions which include coaching. Coach fees are negotiated with the coach
and paid directly to the coach. Skaters must meet session
criteria and follow ice etiquette guidelines as posted on the website. Sessions are
designated as Freeskate or Open. See the Ice Schedule for more
details.
New Junior skaters may feel a bit lost out on the ice with the other figure
skaters the first little while after spending their skating time in Canskate
or JD lessons. Going over the
Skater Code of Conduct will help them adjust more quickly and safely.
Competitive Program
Turning Talent into Opportunity
Any skater who has demonstrated the dedication and talent to become a competitive figure skater has earned the opportunity to access the best training possible. Sunset Skating Club offers all that is needed:
- ice time
- great coaching staff
- enrichment classes
- off ice programs
Sunset club coaches come equipped with international experience both as competitors and coaches.
Sunset offers senior ice time all year round, incorporating enrichment classes every day:
- spin sessions
- edge development
- speed and stroking enrichments
-competition simulations with guest judges and technical specialists
Skaters who are part of the competitive stream learn a variety of life skills as they progress up the ladder of competition. Strong work ethics are emphasized during each day at Sunset as the coaches strive to instill positive personality traits that will help carry these young athletes through their entire lives. Determination, dedication, commitment and the ability to act as role models for younger Sunset skaters will help them achieve excellence on and off the ice. With the goal of being part of Provincial or National teams, skaters earn the chance to travel across Canada and beyond for annual competitions.
Both Starskate and Competitive skaters benefit from our varied off ice programs,
specifically tailored to different skill levels of participants.
Our off-ice team includes:
- Lori Fung: Flexibility (Olympic Gold medalist)
- Maki Riddington: Strength & Conditioning (Certified Personal Trainer)
- Dryland Jumping
