What is Junior Development?
On-ice training of jumps, spins, stroking, edges, turns, and musicality will be developed through this mandatory 2-day per week program. Class sizes are kept small (7 skaters per coach or less) in order to allow for individual attention. Skaters must show their commitment in enrolling in the entire twice-a-week program.
Off-ice training improves the skaters' flexibility, strength and coordination. Jumping technique and air positions as well as general skating knowledge are taught in the off-ice portion of the program. Sunset SC's JD coaching staff is one of the best in Vancouver. Nationally certified coaches with competitive history will work with your child on a weekly basis to ensure they develop the necessary figure skating basics.
Skating attire for Junior Development differs greatly from that of Canskate. Girls are to arrive in a skating dress or skirt with their hair in a bun or tied back. Boys are to wear appropriate skating pants. No loose clothing or heavy winter jackets. Helmets are not recommended or necessary at this level. Athletic shoes and a water bottle are necessary for off-ice training.
Skaters in the Junior Development program are working towards the goal of transitioning into our StarSkate / Competitive programs. Skaters will receive a letter once they have been assessed by the Sunset JD Coaches and coordinators as being ready to take private lessons with one of our Sunset Club Coaches in order to further pursue test and competitive achievements in figure skating.
Junior Development is now divided into two programs based on age. These two programs will
run simultaneously.
JD FastTrack
(8 years old and under as of January 5th, 2010)
JD StarSkate
(9 years old and over as of January 5th, 2010)
Skaters in the Fast Track program are working
towards the goal of transitioning into private lessons with one of our
Sunset Club Coaches. Skaters that continue into private lessons work towards
test/competitive achievements. Off-ice training improves the skaters'
flexibility, strength and coordination. Jumping technique and air positions
as well as general skating knowledge are taught in the off-ice portion of
the program.
Skaters in the Starskate program are
encouraged to pursue skating for recreational or competitive goals.
Participation in our annual Sunset Ice Show (every March) is offered to all
the skaters in the JD program. JD skaters have their own group number each
year.
